Resilience is not experienced in going down but in getting up again. The peaks and valleys never stop in life. Grieving is something that cannot be ignored. To love is to destroy, and that to be loved is to be destroyed. This is not some hall of mirrors at a fairground, which deliberately distorts faces and body shapes: whatever we see when we look in the mirror is what the mirror was accurately and faithfully ‘swallowed’. Grief can be dangerous since it is a journey with no direction. I dress up to stare at my reflection as I walk by mirrors and windows. In this short poem, she uses the image of a mirror at a party, throwing back at her the half-familiar sight of her own self, as a way of pondering the relationship between love and self-love.
